Marietta Art in the Park

The 25th annual Marietta Art in the Park festival returns to Glover Park in Marietta Square from September 3 – 5, 2011. The annual art festival takes place in Marietta Square each Labor Day weekend and features a juried exhibition pieces by over 150 artists from all over the country as well as local artists from the Marietta area. All items are handmade original work including paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, woodworking, pottery, and more.

Marietta Cityscape Project:
The Marietta Cityscape Project, sponsored by Keep Marietta Beautiful, allows everyone to design their own piece of the town using boxes, paper towel rows, paper bags, paints construction paper and other recyclable materials. Marietta landmarks will be featured along with local businesses and when complete could measure 10 ft X 40 ft. Young artists will also have the opportunity to create puppets, noise shakers, sand art creations, mosaic art and much more.

Interactive Art Alley:
Discover your inner artist at the the Interactive Art Alley. The art alley is full of many wonderful and free “make and take” art stations for visitors both young and old.

Chalk Art Competition:
On Saturday, September 3rd, 2011, Art in the Park, in conjunction with The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, is launching the inaugural Chalk Art Competition during the festival. This juried competition will feature a competition divided by grade level: k-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th and will also include a graduate to professional category. Participants will have the opportunity to display their talents with dynamic chalk art works in randomly selected sidewalk squares. These works will be judged at the end of the day and will remain on display throughout the Festival (weather permitting).

During the Labor Day Weekend event, area shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, the Marietta Museum of History, The Strand, and Theatre in the Square operate with extended hours.

Marietta Streetfest


Classics, collectibles, and treasures await at the 20th Annual Marietta Streetfest on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 9am to 5pm. Formerly known as the Marietta Antique Street Festival, the Marietta Streetfest is held on the historic Marietta Square and features antiques, autos and more.

The event is a fundraiser for the Marietta Museum of History and puts Georgia pride on display by featuring Georgia antique dealers, Georgia artisans, Georgia attractions, the Marietta Square Farmers Market (9am to noon), the Trash or Treasure Show, and the Hubcaps and History Marietta Classic Car Show.

Antiques
More than fifty dealers from around the state of Georgia will showcase their unique collections. Choose from a selection of unique collectors’ items, fine furniture, home decorations, glass, porcelains, bottles, linens, and collectibles.

Artisans
Georgia artisans will be displaying their diverse selection of products ranging from folk art to shabby chic and traditional home furnishings.

Trash or Treasure Show
You have probably been wondering about the value of that family heirloom, so why not stop by and get a free verbal approximation from a local antiques expert. Stop by between 11am and 2pm to get the story on your treasure (one item per household please).

Hubcaps and History Marietta Classic Car Show
The popular Hubcaps and History Car Show is back from 10am to 4pm. Participants and browsers alike enjoy this show featuring classic cars 25 years and older. Winners are selected by popular vote.

Glover Park Concert Series

Marietta Glover Park Concert Series

The 2011 Glover Park Concert Series takes place on the last Friday evening of each month from April to September. Enjoy music under the stars and be sure to bring a picnic and blankets or set up your lawn chairs after 4pm (no tarps or tents). Personal tables can be set up in the street on North Park Square after 6:00pm but not in Glover Park. The free outdoor concerts take place at 8pm rain or shine.

All concerts are free all summer long, but if you’re looking for a front-row seat, a limited number of tables can be reserved. The cost is $45 for a table that seats six people, or $55 for a table for eight. For more information about table reservations, call (770) 794-5601. This year’s concert series feature Pop music with Glow Band, 70′s and 80′s music from Neons, a performance by Cobb Symphony Orchestra – part of the Cobb Symphony Orchestra Free Summer Concert Series, a Party Rock concert by Yacht Rock, an R&B and Beach music performance by Jesters, a Beach & Oldies show by The Glow Band, and beach music from Pieces of Eight.

Open Mic Night at The Strand

The Earl Smith Strand Theatre will host Open Mic Nights as a forum for local performers to showcase their talents for the community this July. Local music lovers and performers alike will enjoy an evening filled with personality, good humor, and great local music in The Strand’s fourth level event room and rooftop terrace.

Bands or individuals must register in advance to schedule their “open mic” time. Sign up begins 30 days in advance via email and closes 24 hours before the doors open. Performers are asked to send an email with name, age, tech needs, genre, the number of performs in the act, and any additional performance information to andrew@earlsmithstrand.org and confirmations will be returned with performance time. There are 20 slots per night. Each performance will be limited to a two-song or eight-minute performance. No drum kits, effects petals, or tracking allowed and group performances may not exceed four members.The Strand will provide two ¼ inch guitar cables, two XLR Mic Cables, two Shure SM58 Vocal Mics, Mic Stands, Keyboard and a PA system.

Open Mic Nights will be held on July 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2011 from 7pm to 10:30pm with Andrew Cole as the Emcee. Doors open at 5:45 PM with a cash bar opening at 6 PM.

Fourth of July Parade, Festival, and Fireworks

Come out and celebrate America’s independence as the City of Marietta hosts the 2011 Fourth in the Park celebration beginning on Monday, July 4, 2011 at 10am. The Independence Day celebration begins with the Marietta Freedom Parade that starts at Roswell Street Baptist Church and ends at North Marietta Parkway (click here for a parade map – PDF). After the parade there will be free live concerts and entertainment, museum tours, food, arts and crafts, carnival games, and of course fireworks.

The parade spans a 1.5 mile route beginning at Roswell Street Baptist Church and heads west on Roswell St, then north on East Park Square through Marietta Square, then down Cherokee Street and finishing at North Marietta Parkway. The parade features more than two thousand participants in more than one hundred entries, and there will be an estimated thirty thousand people in attendance. Watch as local businesses, civic organizations, beauty queens, bands, scouts, National Guard, and numerous floats participate and compete for prizes based on design, color, theme, appearance, originality, and riders and costumes.

The Arts and Crafts show features more than eighty different vendors showcasing a wide variety of products. The vendors will be open from 10am to 9pm on July 4th, 2011.

Food will be available from a variety of concessions beginning at 10am. Marietta Square restaurants will also be open for business.

Carnival games are available throughout the park at Marietta Square from 10am-9pm; tickets for games available at booths located throughout the park.

Fireworks light up the sky and patriotic music fills the air at dark.

The 2012 Taste of Marietta takes place on Sunday, April 29 from 11am to 7pm. The 19th annual event takes place in the historic Marietta Square and features over eighty restaurants and caterers showcasing their best food. Tastes range in price from just $0.50 to $4.50. In addition, there are five live music stages and a sunset concert on the Main Stage in Glover Park. The event also features games for the kids in the Kid’s Alley, a sports corner as well as a cooking stage with celebrity cheifs’ cooking demonstrations. The Taste of Marietta takes place rain or shine, and admission is free.

Also, don’t forget to bring some canned goods to help feed the hungry in Marietta. MUST Ministries is having a food drive with a drop off booth to help stock their food pantry.

About Taste of Marietta:
Taste of Marietta is an annual food festival that takes place on the last Sunday in April. First Friday Art Walk


The 2011 First Friday Art Walk takes place in historic Marietta Square on the first Friday of each month from March to October. The Art Walk is a free, self guided tour showcasing local original art. Local artists are hosted by Marietta Square area restaurants, galleries, museums, venues and boutiques from 5pm to 9pm, rain or shine, and participating venues display an official Art Walk banner in their window.

You can choose your own route through the over thirty merchants hosting artists in their stores, and don’t forget to visit “Artists’ Alley” featuring a juried exhibit showcasing a variety of artistic styles. Also located in the Artists’ Alley area is the headquarters of the Art Walk, where you can pick up a map before you begin. Be sure to visit Artists’ Alley and register for your chance to win a “Hip to Be Square” $100 gift certificate redeemable at any participating merchant.

Artists’ Alley:
This year’s First Friday Art Walk will feature a new location for Artists’ Alley. Art Walk Artists’ Alley at DuPre’s Antique Market – this intimate exhibit of juried artists showing a wide variety of styles has moved indoors into a 3000 square foot, lite warehouse space at Dupre’s located at 17 Whitlock Ave.

Strand Auditioning for Motown Tribute


The Earl Smith Strand Theatre is holding auditions on May 3 and 5 by appointment only for a musical revue called “A Tribute to Motown.” Performers must be between the ages of 17 and 35, able to sing, dance, and have the ability to learn quickly, and must attend all show rehearsals which will begin June 13. The show will run July 1 through 4 of 2011.

Those auditioning are asked to bring a resume, a headshot, and come dressed to move. Each participant must prepare a 30 second CD cut of a Motown song or be ready to perform a cappella. No ipods or live accompaniment permitted. Performers that are cast will receive a small stipend.
