The Australian Bakery Cafe brings the flavors of Australia to Marietta Square, with savory meat pies, sausage rolls, sweet pastries, and Australian grocery favorites. Native Australians Neville Steel and Mark Allen founded the cafe in 2001, with third generation master baker Neville Steel bringing generations of baking experience to its ovens. More than two decades later, the bakery remains one of the Square’s most distinctive places to eat and a great introduction to a proper Australian meat pie.

The star of the show at the Australian Bakery Cafe is the meat pie, with roughly 500 made each day. Each pie is handmade and baked daily, with savory fillings tucked inside a flaky pastry crust. More than 20 varieties are available, including steak and mushroom, curry chicken, and the Ned Kelly Pie. Some pies are somewhat like a traditional chicken pot pie, while others are a bit closer to a quiche, with plenty of distinctly Australian options in between. As Mark Allen puts it, “Our goal was not just to make the best meat pies in America, but to rival anything back home in Australia too.” Judging by the frequent rave reviews, they’ve succeeded.

In addition to its signature meat pies, the Australian Bakery Cafe has plenty more on the menu. Sausage rolls feature a savory blend of pork and beef wrapped in flaky pastry, while Aussie Breakfast Pies are made with eggs, cheese, and other breakfast fillings. For lunch, the cafe offers “Sanga” sandwiches made to order on fresh artisan bread, including roasted chicken and slow roasted beef. Other options include fish and chips, fish sandwiches, salads, soups, freshly baked breads, potato cakes, and traditional Aussie dim sims.
