Theatre in the Square’s Conversations With My Wife

Theatre in the Square will be presenting the world premier of Conversations With My Wife, a tenderly human and funny love story about one man struggling to write the next chapter of his life seven years after the death of his wife. Conversations With My Wife, by Leonard Gross, opens Wednesday, September 29, at 8 p.m. on the Main Stage. Tickets are available at the Box Office by calling 770-422-8369.

Conversations With My Wife will touch the heart of anyone who has ever known and lost a love. “Everyone in our audience knows what loss feels like – and therefore, telling a story about someone learning to live again is a very important story to tell… in a way that only theatre can tell it”, said Director Heidi Cline McKerley. The play is partly based on and wholly inspired by the illness and death, in 2001, of Jacquelyn Wagoner Gross, Leonard Gross’ wife of 49 years.

Over the span of his career, Mr. Gross has been a print journalist, an author and now a playwright. Conversations With My Wife is the sixth of seven plays he has written. He admits that his fear for writing this play was twofold: “Having come late in life to playwriting, would I have the ability to write such a challenging play? Second, would revisiting the events I’d spent years coming to terms with reawaken my doubts and sorrow?”

Conversations With My Wife is a play in one act starring Judy Leavell (Sara), who was last seen at Theatre in the Square in The Savannah Disputation and John Stephens (Sam), Theatre Gael’s Artistic Director. Members of the artistic team that will bring this compelling story to life on stage are director Heidi Cline McKerley, set designer John Thigpen, lighting designer Michael Callahan, sound designer Brian Patterson, costume designer English Benning, props designer Lindsay Moore, and stage manager Julie A. Richardson.

Performances are Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. There is a Wednesday matinee at 2:30 p.m. on October 27 only and preview performances on Sunday, September 26 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, September 28 at 8 p.m. There is no 7 p.m. performance on Sunday, October 31. Student matinee performances are available, and the play is recommended for ages 16 and up.

Tickets are $24 to $33 and are available at the Theatre in the Square Box Office by calling 770-422-8369. Discount rates are available for groups of 12 or more by calling 770-422-8369 x29. Theatre in the Square is located off of historic Marietta Square at 11 Whitlock Ave.

Witty Pirates Batten Down the Hatches at Theatre in the Square

Theatre in the Square’s Theatre for Youth production for the 2010-11 season, How I Became a Pirate, by Alyn Cardarelli and Steve Goers, is based on the award-winning, best selling children’s book by the same title written by Melinda Young and illustrated by David Shannon. How I Became a Pirate opens Tuesday, September 14, at 10 a.m. on the Alley Stage. Tickets are available at the Box Office by calling 770-422-8369.

While spending an afternoon on North Beach with his family, Jeremy Jacob realizes that his mom is too distracted with his new baby sister to see his amazing sandcastle that is under attack by pirate figurines. However, a group of real pirates, lead by Captain Braid Beard come ashore, take note of Jeremy’s exceptional digging skills and ask him to come on board and join the crew as a digger. Jeremy enjoys the pirate life filled with a lack of table manners and an opposition to changing diapers, until there is no one to kiss him and tuck him in at night. The Pirates, Captain Braid Beard (Brad Raymond), Jacque LaToe (David Howard), Millicent “Milt” Skeeter (Allison Murphey), Stubby Barbossa (Nick Arapoglou), and Wheezing McGee(Jimi Kocina), teach Jeremy (Jeremy Ledbetter) how to talk like a pirate and Jeremy teaches them about soccer.

How I Became a Pirate includes colorful songs like “Talk Like a Pirate”, “Pirates Never Tuck You In” and “The Treasure song” each sung to the tune classic kid’s songs. The show features a multicultural cast of Atlanta actors. Director Clint Thornton says the one hour production will be “thrilling, suspenseful, joyful, and hopefully exhilarating.”

Other members of the production team that will be dropping anchor for How I Became a Pirate include music director Bryan Mercer, sound designer Thom Jenkins, set designer Seamus M. Bourne, costume designer Lindsey Paris and props designer Lindsay Moore.

Performances are Tuesdays through Fridays at 10 a.m. (with 12 noon performances on select weekdays) and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. September 14 through October 10. On Saturday, September 19, for International Talk Like A Pirate Day, Theatre in the Square invites guests to come dressed like pirates and enjoy fun activities like making pirate hats and a “tattoo” parlor. Activities will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Alley Stage lobby.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children and are available at the Theatre in the Square Box Office by calling 770-422-8369. Discount rates for are available for groups of 10 or more by calling 770-422-8369 x29. Theatre in the Square is located off of historic Marietta Square at 11 Whitlock Ave.

North Georgia State Fair Non-Commercial Exhibits and Flower Show

The time is fast approaching when the annual North Georgia State Fair will be accepting entries for the non-commercial exhibit competitions, which feature flowers, baked goods, canning, and arts and crafts. Area residents are encouraged to enter their masterpieces in categories such as homemade canned goods, photography, painting, woodcarving, basketry, needlework and more in the competition.

“We encourage everyone to enter their flowers, fruits and vegetables this year. Come on out and show off your prized horticulture specimens and win a blue ‘first place’ ribbon. If you are interested in entering a design, check out the schedule and contact the design consultant and entries chair,” said Holly Walquist, chairperson of the flower shows and board member of the Marietta Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Cobb County Fair Association.

The fairgrounds will be filled with the sights and smells of colorful, fragrant flower displays designed to help you see blooms of the south in a different medium. The categories of competition include roses, dahlias, orchids, cactuses, lilies, irises, begonias, zinnias, marigolds, asters, impatiens, daisies, herbs, shrubs, trees, vines, chrysanthemums, hanging plants, fruit plants and more; as well as design categories.

Instead of a single bloom or plant, the design categories encourage creativity in designing displays with natural and floral ingredients. Vegetable entries are also accepted at both flower shows. Educational exhibits are also welcome. Participants in the single specimen or container categories just need to get their entries in by the proper time.

The competition is open to gardeners of all ages, and children are encouraged to enter.

Before September 4th – (770) 423-1330
