A new dessert shop is almost ready to roll into the front trolley space at Marietta Square Market. Das Sweet Treat is just one permit and final inspection away from officially opening its first permanent storefront, offering authentic German baked goods with a focus on one of its signature items: Quarkbällchen. If that word sounds familiar, you may have seen (or smelled) them at events like the Atlanta and Roswell Christkindlmarkets or the Dogwood Festival, where these lightly sweetened fried treats tend to vanish by the dozen.
Quarkbällchen are a popular German snack resembling a hybrid between a donut hole and a beignet. Made with quark (a soft, fresh yogurt-like cheese), flour, eggs, and vanilla sugar, they’re deep-fried to golden perfection. Pronounced “kvahk-bell-shen,” they are crispy on the outside, soft and airy inside, and then rolled in a dusting of sugar or cinnamon-sugar. They’re particularly common in southern Germany, especially Bavaria, and often show up around Christmas, Oktoberfest, or New Year’s celebrations. At Das Sweet Treat, they’ll be served hot and fresh, just like they were in the wooden booths that started it all.
That beginning dates back to the winter of 2019, when the Das Sweet Treat team debuted at the Atlanta Christkindl Market with a simple setup, a batch of homemade dough, and a lot of hope. Without a storefront, they relied on hand-mixed ingredients, long lines, and word of mouth to build a following.
The upcoming location at Marietta Square Market will stay true to what started it all. The focus remains on quality ingredients, time-tested recipes, and a treat that feels straight out of a Bavarian bakery.
While an official opening date hasn’t been announced, final inspections are in progress. When they open, guests can expect to find warm treats fresh out of the fryer, the same ones that sparked long lines and repeat customers across metro Atlanta.
