Open Mic Night at The Strand

The Earl Smith Strand Theatre will host Open Mic Nights as a forum for local performers to showcase their talents for the community this July. Local music lovers and performers alike will enjoy an evening filled with personality, good humor, and great local music in The Strand’s fourth level event room and rooftop terrace.

Bands or individuals must register in advance to schedule their “open mic” time. Sign up begins 30 days in advance via email and closes 24 hours before the doors open. Performers are asked to send an email with name, age, tech needs, genre, the number of performs in the act, and any additional performance information to andrew@earlsmithstrand.org and confirmations will be returned with performance time. There are 20 slots per night. Each performance will be limited to a two-song or eight-minute performance. No drum kits, effects petals, or tracking allowed and group performances may not exceed four members.The Strand will provide two ¼ inch guitar cables, two XLR Mic Cables, two Shure SM58 Vocal Mics, Mic Stands, Keyboard and a PA system.

Open Mic Nights will be held on July 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2011 from 7pm to 10:30pm with Andrew Cole as the Emcee. Doors open at 5:45 PM with a cash bar opening at 6 PM.

2012 Taste of Marietta

The 2012 Taste of Marietta takes place on Sunday, April 29 from 11am to 7pm. The 19th annual event takes place in the historic Marietta Square and features over eighty restaurants and caterers showcasing their best food. Tastes range in price from just $0.50 to $4.50. In addition, there are five live music stages and a sunset concert on the Main Stage in Glover Park. The event also features games for the kids in the Kid’s Alley, a sports corner as well as a cooking stage with celebrity cheifs’ cooking demonstrations. The Taste of Marietta takes place rain or shine, and admission is free.

Also, don’t forget to bring some canned goods to help feed the hungry in Marietta. MUST Ministries is having a food drive with a drop off booth to help stock their food pantry.

Cost:

Admission to the event is free, tastes range from $0.50 to $4.50 each. Unlike other festivals, tickets are not required and it is a cash-based festival. ATM machines are available. Inflatables/moonwalks in the kids corner are also available for a fee.

About Taste of Marietta:
Taste of Marietta is an annual food festival that takes place on the last Sunday in April. Attracting over 100,000 people last year, it is the longest running and largest food festival in Cobb County. The event takes place in historic Marietta Square and also includes live entertainment, a kids alley, a sports corner, as well as close proximity to the numerous shops and museums in the surrounding square.

Marietta Greek Festival

The 21st annual Marietta Greek Festival takes place at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church from May 13-15, 2011.  The event celebrates Greek traditions, culture and delicious Greek food.  A wide variety of Greek food will be available for purchase, including favorites such as Chicken Oreganato (Greek-style chicken), Souvlaki (pork tenderloin kebabs), Keftedes (Greek-style meatballs), Dolmades (seasoned ground beef & rice wrapped in grapevine leaves), Spanakopita (spinach & feta cheese pie with a flaky filo crust), gyro wrap (seasoned beef or marinated chicken, grilled & served on pita bread, topped with Tzatziki sauce), and numerous other Greek foods as well as a kids menu featuring hot dog and chips, kids chicken oreganato or kids keftedes. Sampler and combo platters are also available, and beverage choices include soft drinks, bottled water, wine, beer, greek beer, ouzo (grapes distilled with aromatic seeds such as anise, coriander and fennel), and metaxa (a blend of brandy and wine).

Greek Festival FoodBe sure to save room for dessert which includes almond crescents, baklava, chocolate baklava, galatoboureko, kourabiethes, koulourakia, rizogalo, karithopita, diples, floyeres, kataifi, baklava sundae and greek cream puffs. Can’t make up your mind, then try the dessert sampler which includes 8 festival favorites.

The Hellenic Dance Program will be performing throughout the festival. The program is comprised of six dance groups that cover pre-k through 12th grade as well as a young adult group. The performances begin with traditional dance shows during the day, and progressing towards more modern dance club hits at the end of the evening.

The event also features a Greek marketplace with more than twenty vendors with items including Greek jewelry, handmade linens, scarves, Greek cuisine, Greek cookbooks, art, oil paintings, candle holders, wood crafted items and more.

Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox ChurchChurch tours are available throughout the weekend and last approximately 10 minutes.  The Byzantine style sanctuary and church tour showcases the rich color, distinctive iconography and beauty of the interior of the Orthodox church.

Wing N’ Rock Fest

Marietta Wing N' Rock Fest

Why did the chicken wing cross the road . . . to get to the cold beer and great fun at the 6th Annual Wing N’ Rock Fest! Wing lovers of all ages will enjoy this huge all-day outdoor festival, featuring live rock bands and 50 types of wings from area wing experts. “Extreme” wing lovers can win some fantastic prizes by signing up for the “heated” Wing Eating Contest.

Live music will be provided throughout the day.
