Evening with History – Ron Ransom

Ron Ransom, best known for his iconic carved wooden Santa figures, will be sharing his stories on November 18th 2010 at 7pm. Mr. Ransom has been the “Thumbs Up” cartoonist for the Marietta Daily Journal for nearly three decades and is an accomplished author –selling over 50,000 copies of his “How To” carving books. The World of Coca-Cola Museum asked Mr. Ransom to carve a Santa for them and now proudly displays his work of art.

Junior Ranger Tour Day

This is an event for all those Junior Rangers! Marietta Museum of History will be doing a tour of the Museum galleries as well as a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum. Kids will learn how about giving tours and how to properly store items. Tours will be at 11:30 and 1:30. Tours will last about an hour.

Banks and Shane

Since 1972, Banks Burgess and Paul Shane have entertained audiences in Atlanta and around the globe with their fun folk sounds. Marietta Museum of History Aviation Wing Sneak-A-Peek

Although the Aviation Wing of the Marietta Museum of History does not officially open until sometime early next year, the Museum and its volunteers have been making quite a bit of progress and would like to show it off. On August 20th and 21st, from 10am to 3pm, the Museum will be opening the doors at the aviation site for visitors to come out for a FREE day.

This is a chance to bring the family and explore some of the aircraft as well as the progress of the site thus far. There are four aircraft that will be open for visitors to enter and explore; The C-141 StarLifter plane, JetStar plane, S-3 Viking plane, and the H-1 Iroquois helicopter. Volunteers will also be available to give guided tours around the site.

There will be booths with information on the Marietta Museum of History and the Aviation Wing site. In addition, the non-profit, Operation Stars and Stripes, Inc., will have games for the children, letter writing to soldiers overseas, and wish-list of items that are needed for our military men and women.

Juneteenth Concert

Enjoy music under the stars with the Cobb County NAACP Branch’s Juneteenth concert on Friday, June 19th, 2015 from 6pm to 11pm. The event features Jazz, R&B, Spoken Word, and more. Marietta Grassroots Music Festival

The Marietta Grassroots Music Festival takes place on the historic Marietta Square as part of the Marietta Streetfest. The event showcases local music of all genres from our area – all bands are based out of the metro Atlanta area and play all-age appropriate, live music.

USTA National Open at Harrison Tennis Center

Cobb County will once again play host to the USTA National Open for boys and girls ages 16 and under. The event will be held at Harrison Tennis Center from May 22nd-26th, 2010. This event attracts many of the top players from around the country.

Past participants include several players who are currently playing on the professional tour, including Marietta’s rising star Melanie Oudin. The draw will comprise of 64 boys and 64 girls who are nationally ranked.

The competition will begin on Saturday morning with the singles events. Doubles will begin late Saturday afternoon. The tournament will continue through Wednesday, May 26, when many of the finals are held.

If you want to see some of our nation’s best young players, come out to Harrison Tennis Center during this event. You can keep up with the tournament draw on the tournament web site. Many of Cobb’s best players will be competing – come out and support some of our country’s tennis best!!!!

A ‘Ride of Silence’ on Marietta Square

May is National Bicycle Month and the event “Ride of Silence” will be held Wednesday, May, 19, 2010 to honor cyclists who were struck by a vehicle while riding their bicycles. Black armbands will be worn if riding in memory of someone killed and red if riding in honor of a survivor. The ride is approximately 8 1/2 miles and begins at the Marietta City Hall Parking Deck.

All ages are invited to ride in this free event, but parental supervision is required for children.

LOST Finale on the Big Screen (FREE)

Attention LOST fans! For the past six seasons, you’ve been on a roller coaster ride. On Sunday, May 23, the thrill ride comes to an end as ABC presents the final episode. Bring friends, grab a popcorn, and find out whether the remaining survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 will unlock the mysteries and secrets of the island, whether they can thwart the plans of the “Man in Black,” and who the last candidate is. At 7 PM, catch a two-hour retrospective LOST: The Final Journey. At 9 PM, the final, extended 2 1/2 hour final episode begins. There are only 531 seats and a maximum of 531 people will be admitted. General admission/no assigned seating. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Concessions and full bar will be open for your snacking pleasure. Admission is free.
