Restaurant Report Card: Rose & Crown Rebounds, Mambo Italiano Improves, and Thai Cafe Faces Repeat Issues

This batch of inspections delivered two strong comeback stories. Rose & Crown climbed from a 76 earlier this month to a 97 on a follow-up inspection, while Mambo Italiano improved from a 67 to an 87 after its own follow-up.

On the other end, Thai Cafe posted a 72, the lowest score in this group. Inspectors cited several issues, including a repeat pest violation involving roaches that had also been documented during a previous inspection in September 2025.

Independence Eve Brings Drivin N Cryin to Marietta Square

The City of Marietta is opening its Fourth of July weekend a little early this year. Independence Eve is set for Friday, July 3, 2026 with Atlanta band Drivin N Cryin taking the stage from 7 to 9 pm at Glover Park on the Marietta Square. The City of Marietta is billing the concert as a free kickoff to its 2026 Fourth in the Park celebration and part of the city’s observance of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the evening concert. The city has also noted that there will be no table or VIP reservations for Independence Eve, so this one looks built for lawn-chair planning, strategic parking, and maybe claiming a good patch of grass before the first guitar hits.

That history makes the booking a strong fit for a Marietta event built around hometown flavor and a summer holiday crowd. Drivin N Cryin has been on the road for decades, so the band knows how to handle an outdoor concert setting.

Independence Eve lands the night before Marietta’s annual Fourth in the Park celebration on July 4. The July 4 event begins at 10 am with the Let Freedom Ring Parade, followed by a full day of festival activities, concerts, and fireworks after dark.

Full details for Independence Eve are still rolling out, though the city has already confirmed the concert date, time, and headliner. For now, the basics are in place: free music, a marquee Atlanta band, and a solid reason to head to the Square before the parade floats and fireworks take over the next day.

People new to the state often ask about the climate. Longtime residents usually laugh for a moment, then explain that Georgia does not operate on four seasons. Instead, the state runs on a rotating schedule of twelve.

Here is the unofficial calendar.

1. Winter

Winter arrives with a few chilly mornings, at least one forecast that suggests snow, and a frantic run on bread and milk. The snow rarely arrives. The bread and milk still disappear from store shelves.

Temperatures hover somewhere between “pleasant jacket weather” and “why is the wind attacking my face?”

2. Fool’s Spring

A beautiful stretch of sunny days appears. Flowers start thinking about blooming. People grill dinner outside. Shorts return.

Residents say things like, “This year’s winter wasn’t so bad.”

Georgia quietly laughs.

3. Second Winter

Three days later, temperatures drop again. The wind returns with attitude. Everyone digs the coat back out of the closet.

The flowers that believed in Fool’s Spring begin reconsidering their life choices.

4. Spring of Deception

Warm air returns once again. Trees start budding. Patios fill with diners enjoying the sunshine.

Veterans of Georgia weather keep one eye on the forecast and refuse to pack away sweaters.

5. Third Winter

A surprise cold snap appears. Temperatures dive overnight. The heater runs again.

At this point residents simply nod and say, “Yep. That tracks.”

6. The Pollening

Every surface turns yellow. Cars, sidewalks, puddles, dogs, and occasionally the air itself is coated in pollen.

People walk outside for five minutes and return indoors sneezing like they just put their nose in a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Local car washes enjoy their most profitable time of the year.

7. Actual Spring

Finally, the weather behaves like spring. Mild temperatures, blooming trees, and perfect afternoons arrive.

People remember why they like living in Georgia.

This pleasant stretch lasts approximately nine minutes.

8. Summer

Heat begins creeping upward. Afternoon thunderstorms appear like clockwork. Humidity starts doing pushups.

Residents start saying things like, “At least it isn’t August yet.”

9. Hell’s Front Porch

August arrives and the air feels like warm soup. Walking outside feels similar to opening a dishwasher mid-cycle.

The humidity becomes so thick that sunglasses fog up instantly. Even the mosquitoes move a little slower.

10. False Fall

One refreshing weekend appears with cooler air and a nice breeze. Pumpkin decorations hit the stores immediately.

People say, “Finally, fall!”

Georgia is not finished.

11. Second Summer

Temperatures jump right back into the high 80s or 90s. Sweaters return to the closet. The air conditioning gets another round of work.

Pumpkin decorations remain, creating a confusing mix of autumn and sweat.

12. Actual Fall

At last, cooler weather arrives for real. Crisp mornings, colorful leaves, and comfortable afternoons settle in across the state.

People spend more time outside, football and fall festivals dominate weekends, and the weather behaves like it actually read the calendar this time.

This calm stretch lasts long enough for everyone to relax before the cycle quietly resets and Winter returns again.

Restaurant Report Card: Three Big Comebacks and a 67 That Needs Attention

This round of health inspections brought a strong rebound story for several restaurants. Reveille Cafe bounced back from a 73 earlier this year to a perfect 100, while Dumpling Garden jumped from a failing 51 to an 89 and Tasty China climbed from 58 to 85 after follow-up inspections.

Most kitchens in this report performed well, with a long list of perfect scores, including the newly inspected Deep Roots in downtown Marietta, which opened strong with a perfect score. On the other end of the scale, Mambo Italiano in Atlanta posted the lowest score in this batch with a 67.

Marietta the Gathering

Marietta the Gathering brings together enthusiasts of geek community, pop, culture, and the arts in a vibrant festival at the Historic Marietta Square on March 7, 2026. The annual festival is a showcase and celebration of the multifaceted nature of geek pop culture.

The Guild Show: 10 am to 8 pm

The Guild Show spans the entire day and features artists, makers, and merchandisers displaying items ranging from art to crafts and unique merchandise.

Tourney Alley: 10 am to 7 pm

Tourney Alley includes a lineup of tabletop games, card tournaments, and a selection of gaming vendors. The alley will be a hub for strategy, competition, and fun.

Panels, Performances, and Contests

The Main Stage will host a variety of panels and performances throughout the day. Highlights include the Ultimate Showdown, and a Cosplay Costume Contest with pre-judging at the Glover Park Gazebo. Each panel and performance offers a unique glimpse into geek culture, from trivia and safety spells to stand-up comedy and special effects makeup demonstrations.

Premier Music Acts

The festival will feature musical performances on the main stage. Headlining the festival again in 2026 is Raspberry Pie Band (city pop, funk, disco, and contemporary pop) from 7 pm to 8 pm on the Glover Park Stage.

Culinary Delights

Boxwood Social Hall will recreate an indoor gaming tavern atmosphere, offering space for gaming and socializing. To cater to the universal love for food, the festival is inviting unique, exotic, and geek-themed food and beverage vendors like Dano’s Dogs, Delicious Belgian, Silly Little Lemons, Three Ladies Baking, and Williamson Bros BBQ to serve the attendees.

Cubing Competition

New for 2026, Southeast Cubing is hosting a speed cubing tournament running throughout the day at its tent on East Park Square. The event includes 72 competitors, with a mix of first-time World Cube Association participants and solvers visiting from around the world. Expect a steady stream of rapid solves and personal-best attempts, then catch the finals at 4 pm on the East Park Stage.

With a rich program that spans gaming, art, music, and more, Marietta the Gathering celebrates the city’s community and its passion for pop culture and the arts.

Sweep the Hooch

Volunteers will once again roll up their sleeves for the 16th annual Sweep the Hooch on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Organized by the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, the watershed-wide cleanup runs from 9 am to 12 pm and includes more than 65 locations across the region, including several sites in Marietta and Cobb County.

Each year, volunteers gather at parks, creeks, and river access points along the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries. In 2025, the event set two records, with 1,500 volunteers removing 82,000 pounds, or 41 tons, of trash and recyclables in a single day. That is a lot of debris headed away from the water and into proper disposal.

Cobb County falls within the Metro Atlanta registration region, which includes cleanup locations throughout Cobb as well as neighboring counties. Local volunteers will work along stretches of the Chattahoochee River and nearby tributaries that flow through the Marietta area.

Participants can choose between two types of volunteer roles:

Walkers and Waders work from land and shallow water, collecting litter along riverbanks and in tributaries. Many sites require stepping into shallow water, so rain boots or water shoes are recommended. Some locations may also target invasive plants such as privet.

Paddlers use kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards to cover three to five miles per segment while removing debris from sections of the river that are difficult to reach by land. Volunteers in this category must bring their own equipment, as boats are not provided onsite.

With sites closing once capacity is reached, early registration is strongly encouraged. Participation is free, though each volunteer must register individually. During registration, volunteers will select their preferred location and sign the required liability waiver electronically.

Registration is organized by region, and Cobb County sites are included in the Metro Atlanta category.

Children are welcome to participate but must be supervised at all times by an adult. Parents are required to remain onsite with their child for the duration of the cleanup.

Walkers and waders must be at least 10 years old. Solo paddlers must be at least 15. For tandem paddling, youth must be at least 10 and accompanied by an adult who is at least 21.
