Zoo Atlanta Library Program

Georgia families can now check out free excursions to Zoo Atlanta, just by owning a library card. Announced Feb. 23 from the steps of the state capitol, a partnership between Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Public Library Service allows adults with valid library cards access to the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass at any participating public library branch throughout the state of Georgia.

The Cobb County Public Library System has Zoo Atlanta Family Passes available to check out today. Each of the 17 Cobb County library branches has one pass. When individuals check out the Zoo Atlanta Family Pass DVD from a Cobb County library and return it to the same location, they will get a receipt. They can then use the receipt for zoo admission. The receipt is good for two adults and two children and has to be redeemed within a week.

“We are very pleased to offer this wonderful opportunity to Cobb County residents,” Jonathan McKeown, Associate Director of Central and Outreach Services said. “The treasures that are held in the Cobb County Public Library System paired together with those held at the Zoo Atlanta make for a fitting partnership with the summer just around the corner.”

The pass may be checked out once per year, per card, per household. The pass is not valid for fee-based events or programs and may not be combined with other discounts or promotions. Standard general admission will apply to families with additional children; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Passes are not ‘renewable,’ nor can it be reserved.

Library patrons can check out a Zoo Atlanta Family Pass DVD for one week. If the DVD is lost or damaged, a $30 replacement fee, in addition to any processing fees or overdue fines will be charged by the library.

Launched in 2009, the program originally applied only to branches of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Wednesday’s announcement marks the first time the program has been available in all 159 Georgia counties.

For more information, please call the Cobb County Public Library System at 770-528-2320.

Marietta Square Fountain Returns After Restoration

Marietta Square’s popular fountain was returned to Glover Park in Marietta Square after undergoing a complete restoration. The original manufacturer of the fountain, Robinson Iron, removed the fountain and transported it to their headquarters in Alabama where the internal and external parts were restored to new condition.

The restoration was necessary because, according to the Marietta Parks and Recreation director Rich Buss, “while preparing the fountain for operation now that the weather has warmed, the staff cleaning the upper bowl noticed significant movement that had not been present before. After removing the upper bowl it turned out the fountain was rusting from the inside out.”

March 15 SPLOST vote critical to Cobb’s future

Important news from the Cobb Chamber: On Tuesday, March 15 the citizens of Cobb will vote on a one-cent four year Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). If approved by voters, it will be in effect from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2015. Currently, 4% of Cobb County’s 6% sales tax (one of the lowest sales tax rates in the state) goes to the state, 1% to the School SPLOST and the final %1 to the current County SPLOST (set to expire Dec. 31, 2011).

At its January Board Meeting, the Cobb Chamber Board of Directors unanimously approved to support the 2011 SPLOST renewal, based on the following facts: (1) Since it will not raise taxes, it will keep Cobb County’s taxes the lowest in the region while providing critical infrastructure improvements which are vital for economic growth and job creation while reducing traffic congestion. (2) Not continuing the SPLOST, and loss of this revenue, may force the county to raise property taxes, incur costly deferment of maintenance, and incur debt to keep pace with our past and future growth. (3) 30 percent of the SPLOST revenues are collected from non-county residents. (4)The project list has been vetted by the taxpayers and has a four-year sunset that ensures accountability.

Where will the money go? If approved, SPLOST funds will go to parks, transportation, public safety, libraries, senior centers and other Cobb and city facilities. Each Cobb city will receive a portion of the funds allocated according to 2009 Census estimates.

  • FACILITIES TOTAL $16,748,420
Libraries, Senior Services, Judicial, Public Health and other County facilities in need of repairs, capital improvements, energy efficient upgrades and modernization.
  • PUBLIC SAFETY TOTAL $12,896,400
Funds will go to Public Safety (Fire and Police) critical needs to replace aging facilities, equipment and apparatus. Also planned are improvements to public safety communications systems along with judicial and public health facilities.
  • TRANSPORTATION TOTAL $250,885,000
Projects include infrastructure preservation (resurfacing, bridges and drainage), pedestrian improvements, transit, traffic congestion relief, safety and operational improvements (roadways, intersections and school zones), and federal/state matching funds. SPLOST funding will be leveraged to receive additional funding from other sources, including Federal, State and Community Improvements Districts.
  • PARKS TOTAL $82,023,000
Funding for these projects will be geared toward revitalization of existing parks, and renovations to existing park buildings and facilities including athletic field upgrades.
