MDE School is an accredited K-8 school with a certificate of completion for high school with a focus on life skills and vocational training. It specializes in children with autism, sensory processing and communication disorders and offers unique solutions for unique learners so that each child can meet their maximum potential. MDE has a 4:1 student-teacher ratio and, along with academics, offers many enrichment programs, including physical education, music, drama, art and clubs built into their curriculum so students can learn through many different avenues. “We offer a flexible atmosphere in a more casual setting than the traditional classroom, providing each student with the environment that works best for his or her specific needs. An IEP is created for each student,” says Mindy Elkan, owner and director of MDE.
Individual attention is given to all students, as all academics are addressed with a 1:1 student-teacher ratio so students can meet academic goals while benefiting from a social environment. “A teacher needs to look at the whole child and determine what their needs are in every area,” Elkan says. “All children have strengths and weaknesses and it is important to teach through their strengths to address their needs.”
