Free H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine

Cobb & Douglas Public Health is conducting an H1N1 mass Flu Clinic on Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cobb County Safety Village at 1220 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta, Georgia 30008. The H1N1 flu mist will be provided at no cost. Seasonal flu vaccine will also be provided to income-eligible children 6 months through 18 years of age for $14, or to others for $25.

Based on CDC recommendations for 2009, the target group (and only group eligible) to receive the H1N1 mist is healthy 2 to 24 year-old individuals. “Our goal is to help reduce the number of flu cases by getting as many of our young people vaccinated as possible this weekend,” said Karen Thomas, District Immunization Director, Cobb & Douglas Public Health.

However, the H1N1 flu mist, which will be administered on Saturday, isn’t for everyone. Pregnant women and individuals with asthma or chronic medical conditions should receive the injectable vaccine, which is not available at this time. “While we don’t have the vaccines in yet, we do expect to receive them in the coming weeks and will make them available through our clinic locations,” said Dr Jack Kennedy, District Health Director, Cobb & Douglas Public Health.

Cobb County Storm/Flood Debris Pick Up

Cobb County’s Department of Transportation will coordinate pick up of flood debris from properties in unincorporated Cobb County.

For a 30 day period between September 29 and October 26 residents can request and be provided a container/dumpster which can be filled by the resident with flood damaged materials inclusive of furniture, appliances, carpeting and sheet rock. The cut off of such requests will be October 26 allowing seven days for those residents to complete their debris removal. Vegetative debris and concrete are not to be placed in the container.

Requesting residents must agree that the container is placed on private property so as not to impact traffic in the roadway. Dumpster requests should be directed to 770-528-3666.

Cobb County has a central Web page dedicated to flood disaster recovery information, where residents can find details including volunteering, road closures, emergency shelters, public safety and a field guide for cleaning up flood damaged homes. For more information, visit cobbcounty.org/flood

Diaper Day In Cobb

The Cobb Diaper Day Committee is sponsoring a diaper drive at Glover Park in Marietta Square on Monday, October 26 at 5pm. The diaper day event was founded by a concerned group of community leaders with the goal of raising awareness that, in tough economic times, securing the most basic needs—having diapers to care for infants and children– is a challenge that low-income families face on a regular basis.

Typical problems that low income families face:

  • Food Stamps do not include hygiene products such as diapers.
  • Diapers are expensive.
  • Daycare centers require parents to provide their own diapers.
  • Diaper rash and crying lead to more stress in the home.
  • Local support agencies ( MUST and C.A.M.P.) can only dispense diapers 4-6 times a year per client.

Little Things Often Make A Big Difference
Join the Cobb Diaper Day Committeeon Oct. 26 at 5:00 p.m. at Glover Park on the Marietta Square with your diapers.

Call 770-819-8818 for questions or pick-up, and to learn more, email Barbara Hickey, committee chairman, at esatlanta@bellsouth.net.
